Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 04

1 Q. In the same way as the RSPCA, or in a different way?
              A. Those are generalisations, general requirements. In
2 fact, they originated with a committee known as the
Brambell Committee, I think it was 1965 they reported, and
3 it is a number of organisations which have taken them up.

4 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you just help me, Mr. Morris? When you
introduced it you referred to the RSPCA freedom food
5 labelling announcement. Where does labelling come into
              it?
6 A. For certain products, the RSPCA has linked in with two
retail companies, which are given the privilege of putting
7 the freedom foods label on their products, provided the
production of those products meets these welfare
8 standards, and there is an inspection procedure associated
              with that entitlement.
     9
MR. MORRIS: These standards are greater than the normal legal
    10 standards, are they?
              A. Indeed they are.
    11
         Q. Are they much greater?
12 A. I would say they are greater; they are not much
greater; they are not extreme, they are not extreme.
    13
         Q. Did you say there are two retail chains that are ---
    14 A. That is correct.

15 Q. -- adopting this; do you know who they are?
              A. One of them is the Co-Op; I am not completely certain
16 which the other one is, so I prefer not to say.

    17 Q. OK.

18 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you remember when Dr. Gregory answered
some questions yesterday about standards at the places he
19 visited; he compared them rather than with his subjective
view of what was right or wrong, what the general
20 standards in the industry were. Do you want to ask how
these standards compare with general standards in the
21 industry, as opposed to those which are the minimum
              required by law or regulations?
    22
MR. MORRIS: Yes. The only problem is we have not got the
23 actual practical details, but from your knowledge or
awareness of this freedom food label -- sorry, I forgot
    24 the judge's question.

25 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Shall I ask it?

    26 MR. MORRIS: Yes.

27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You know what I am referring to in the
              answers you gave yesterday?
    28 A. Yes.

29 Q. How do the RSPCA freedom food standards, I will call them,
compare with general standards throughout the industry?
30 A. First of all, there are two freedom foods standards
which have actually been brought into effect. There are
