Day 018 - 26 Jul 94 - Page 06
1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. It is much better if you reserve it for
cross-examination.
2
MR. MORRIS: Mr. Gregory will not know the date of this.
3
MR. JUSTICE BELL: He may do; I would rather you ask when your
4 turn comes. If Mr. Rampton, you having mentioned it,
cares to pick it up, if this witness knows, then that is
5 up to him.
6 MS. STEEL: We did ask Mr. Preston and did he not know.
7 MR. RAMPTON: I am sure Dr. Gregory does not know its date.
8 MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you have questions like that which a
particular witness cannot answer, but you think someone in
9 an executive position in either the first plaintiff or the
second plaintiff can, then again make some kind of star on
10 your notes so you can come back to it.
11 It occurred to me after our discussion last night it may
not be a good reason for delaying those two witnesses we
12 were talking about, but one advantage of them coming back
later rather than sooner is that you or, for that matter,
13 Mr. Rampton can put these loose ends to them. As I say,
that may not be a good reason for calling them much later,
14 but it will mean, after they have been recalled and that
is it, you will not have then to put loose ends to them.
15
But that is just thinking allowed. It is not of any
16 particular significance. Yes, Mr. Rampton?
17 MR. RAMPTON: I will continue now. Dr. Gregory, you visited
for the purposes of this case, I think, four
18 establishments, did you not? Can I list them?
A. Five.
19
Q. Five, was it? You visited the firm of G D Bowes & Co. in
20 Norfolk?
A. Yes.
21
Q. Am I wrong to use the word "rear" in relation to
22 preslaughter growing up of pigs? What word should we use?
A. They breed, they finish and they slaughter.
23
Q. Can we use a compendious word for the first two stages of
24 that process?
A. Please do.
25
Q. Rearing -- is that allowed?
26 A. That is excellent.
27 Q. Bowes both rear and slaughter pigs; I call that one
operation; is that permissible?
28 A. Fine.
29 Q. Sun Valley in Herefordshire does the same for chickens?
A. Correct.
30
Q. So that is No.2. Then the third category of animal is
