Day 016 - 22 Jul 94 - Page 28
1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I was going to say, it must depend to what
extent parents are prepared to indulge their child's
2 expressed wishes.
3 MS. STEEL: That would also go to -----
A. Again, I do not think there is any disagreement
4 between us on that; if this kind of diet, if they have
these breakfast cereals that are loaded with sugar and
5 that are low in fibre -- and sometimes these breakfast
cereals are high in salt as well, I might point out --
6 then it is an arithmetic fact of life that they will not
make the dietary recommendations.
7
Q. Do you think this is typical of what children eat?
8 A. I think it is perfectly reasonable and feasible to put
together a diet like this. At the end of the day, it is
9 up to the individual.
10 Q. Do you not think it is more likely someone who goes to
McDonald's to get their Big Mac, or whatever, and french
11 fries, because they like eating that sort of thing, is
also going to eat a similar sort of thing at home?
12 A. It does not necessarily follow at all.
13 Q. No, but do you not think it is more likely?
A. In my experience, many of the children who go to
14 McDonald's go there occasionally and they go there for a
treat.
15
Q. So you think it is OK to go to McDonald's for a treat?
16 A. I think it is OK to go to McDonald's. I thought we
had established that without any doubt prior to this?
17
Q. In your chart, another example might be -----
18
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you see anything wrong with going to
19 McDonald's for a treat?
A. I do not see anything wrong with going to McDonald's
20 on any occasion, whether it is for a treat -- I mean, we
have demonstrated time and time again that it is quite
21 consistent for individuals to go to McDonald's once a week
and, in fact, on Wednesday, I think it was, we
22 demonstrated that it was perfectly reasonable to have a
typical meal at McDonald's per day and still consume a
23 total diet which meets the dietary guidelines.
24 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I notice in several places on tables of
yours, or appendix 1 version 1.1, diet cola appears
25 again. Is there any reason why you included diet cola
rather than straight cola?
26 A. Well, diet cola would have less sugar.
27 Q. Yes, but a child, given a choice by its parents, might --
or if a child went in on his or her own with a friend
28 might well be inclined to have straight cola rather than
diet cola. Is that the answer? You have included diet
29 cola because it scores none?
A. That was just what I decided to include. If they --
30 even if it was orange juice it would push up the sugar a
bit. Let me look at the others.
