Day 016 - 22 Jul 94 - Page 25
1 MS. STEEL: No. We will move. In fact, you diverted us from
the topic we were on which is the Annual Report 1993.
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right.
3
MS. STEEL: 1991, sorry.
4 A. The American one.
5 Q. Yes. This dietary advice that you think is a -- well,
what do you think of it?
6 A. We are looking now at the ----
7 Q. Page 64.
A. That is headed Dietary Guidelines for Americans?
8
Q. Yes.
9 A. OK. Yes, it seems perfectly reasonable to me.
10 Q. You think that is very helpful?
A. I think it is fair advice, yes.
11
Q. Is that advice, that much advice, given anywhere else in
12 any other of McDonald's pamphlets?
A. Well, to be perfectly frank, I have not had access to
13 all the publications that is put out by McDonald's in the
United States of America.
14
Q. We compared it with the advert, did we not?
15 A. Yes, but I suspect that is probably just a very small
fraction of the information that is generated by
16 McDonald's in the USA.
17 Q. I think this was brought in as an example of how good the
advice was they were giving, is that right?
18 A. I think the main purpose of introducing this was to
demonstrate the products from McDonald's, and how the
19 products from McDonald's would fit into a diet which
conforms to the dietary recommendations.
20
Q. The adverts that we saw are vague, are they not? They do
21 not tell anyone which particular foods to limit and which
to choose for a healthy diet?
22 A. I am back now to the one "More about your Balanced
Diet"?
23
Q. Yes.
24 A. Well, it gives -- it does not give it in the same
detail as it does in the report.
25
Q. It does not specifically say which foods to avoid and
26 which ones to eat?
A. Well, again as I think I pointed out -----
27
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I can read both pages and compare them for
28 myself. If what you are saying is that that page of the
advertisement should have included this item or that item
29 on page 64, then put that.
30 MS. STEEL: It is just a general point that the advertisement
is not very specific.
