Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 13
1 I can describe it for you. Turn, please, towards the
back, though not quite at the back.
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are not suggesting (or maybe you are)
3 that you do not get iron and vitamin B12 from non-meat
foods?
4 A. Well, it can actually be quite difficult on a
vegetarian diet to get an adequate supply of iron. There
5 are actually documented cases of young girls in this
country who are following a vegetarian type diet who are
6 suffering from anaemia because they do not have enough
iron in their diet.
7
MS. STEEL: That study was mentioned in Professor Wheelock's
8 statement. We asked for the name of that study but it was
not given.
9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you give it now?
10
MS. STEEL: If any reliance is placed on that, I would like
11 that to be disclosed.
A. To the best of my recollection, that was supplied.
12
MR. RAMPTON: Do you remember the name of it?
13 A. Not offhand, to be quite honest. I think it was by a
research team in Kings College, London.
14
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there somewhere you can find it fairly
15 readily?
A. I do not think there is, to be quite honest.
16
MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is not in the bundle.
17 A. I know there was a series of questions put to me and
that was one of the questions and I replied and I provided
18 the information.
19 Q. No criticism is made of you, Professor Wheelock. It is
only a question of finding it. It may be it is in my
20 room, maybe at Barlow Lyde & Gilbert. Anyway, we will
have a look for it. Can you turn to the page in the
21 document called "Leaner"? It is towards the back.
A. Yes.
22
Q. All I need you to do is turn over the next page where one
23 sees a similar sort of table?
A. Yes.
24
Q. One sees that in the bottom line of the first section,
25 sodium, the quantities of sodium described as being
contained in the McDLT and the Quarter Pounder with cheese
26 are very considerably greater than those shown in the
sodium advertisement, are they not? We could go back to
27 it.
A. Well, from memory, yes, there is a couple there that
28 are over a thousand milligrams per product.
29 Q. I draw that to your attention in passing. The question
I have about this table (and others like it in this set of
30 documents advertisements) is this: For that time, 1987,
do you regard this sort of nutritional information or
