Day 010 - 11 Jul 94 - Page 08
1 MISS STEEL: We are working around the statement between the
two of us.
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You carry on in your own way. If you feel
3 at any stage it would help if Mr. Lipsett has a copy of
his statement in front of him, then ask for that.
4
MISS STEEL: Right, OK. I think you may -- have you got it
5 there anyway?
A. Yes, I do.
6
Q. Just to go back to the meetings, the round table
7 meetings: They were also attended by -- as well as
community groups, there were also business representatives
8 and government officials and larger groups such as
Greenpeace?
9 A. That is correct.
10 Q. To move on to the campaign itself: You have told us that
the Citizens Clearing House for Hazardous Waste
11 coordinated the nationwide campaign from October 1987, but
I believe the campaign actually started before then; is
12 that right?
A. That is correct. The original, the first action by a
13 local community group involved in the McToxics campaign
occurred in August, on August 1st, of 1987. I think that
14 is a significant date. On August 1st 1987 McDonald's
restaurants in certain communities in Vermont were
15 picketed by local community activists from an organisation
called Vermonters Organise for Clean Up.
16
Subsequent to that, the nationwide day of action occurred
17 in October, but the Clearing House itself was publicising
the day of action through the summer of 1987, and so these
18 materials were in wide circulation prior to the beginning
of the actual campaign, the first day of action.
19
Q. Right. I think you had circulated literature to thousands
20 of people?
A. That is correct. Our mailing list at the time
21 encompassed about 22,000 people in the United States as
well as in other countries.
22
Q. So in October 1987 the first nationwide day of action took
23 place?
A. That is correct.
24
Q. Against McDonald's foam packaging?
25 A. That is correct.
26 Q. Can you tell us a bit more about that?
A. Well, the first nationwide day of action involved
27 about 100 different community organisations which picketed
McDonald's restaurants in various places in the country.
28 These pickets, generally speaking, were composed of
ordinary housewives and students and, in some cases,
29 members of larger environmental organisations such as
Greenpeace and members of my organisation in one case.
30
Q. I think there was a range of people going from school
