     1        A.  As far as I know, from the very beginning.
 
     2   Q.   How long has there been a finance and accounting
              department?
     3        A.  As far as I know, there has always been that.
 
     4   Q.   How long has there been an operational department?
              A.  As far as I know, always.

         Q.   Your department started in 1990; is that correct?
     6        A.  The title of the department "environmental affairs"
              started, to my knowledge, at the beginning of 1990.  The
     7        assumption of environmental affairs responsibility for the
              person that I report to, he assumed environmental
     8        responsibility in 1988.  He did not have a staff to
              support him at that time.  But it was his responsibility
     9        to be in charge of the environmental issue and, going back
              in time, we had a corporate responsibility group that was
    10        formed in the early 70s, because most of their focus at
              that time dealt with the energy issue.

              The energy issue was the most significant issue McDonald's
    12        was facing in the 70s.  We had probably the largest staff
              that we ever had on the environmental issue; it was
    13        actually staffed through the 70s and the 80s dealing with
              the energy issue.

         Q.   Of course, it is good business to reduce energy
    15        consumption?
              A.  Absolutely.

         Q.   You said that the environmental issues -- I quote you --
    17         "escalated throughout the 1980s" in general?
              A.  Yes.

         Q.   Are you aware that -- you may not be aware -- the London
    19        Greenpeace factsheet, which is at the centre of this case,
              was produced in the mid 80s?
    20        A.  I am only aware of it because I have heard it here in
              court.

              environmental issues, I mean, broadly?

              in 1980?
    28        A.  Both broadly.  In particular, I would have more
              specific knowledge about packaging legislation.
