The workers who keep cancelling need to be dealt with

I agree that if you're occasionally needed because your employer is short-handed, it's your duty to report to work. However, if this gets to be excessive, something is wrong. Either the management doesn't have enough hired help scheduled on each shift, or there are too many unreliable employees, and managers too lenient to correct the reliability situation. Having been in the working world for some time now, I've witnessed my share of incidents where employees just didn't show up if they didn't feel like it. Others I've known about frequently called in sick on Fridays and/or Mondays, indicating they have a bad case of the Party Bug, and Hangover Syndrome. I knew one temporary in Data Processing (He trained me to take over his duties.) who came and went on his shift like he owned the place. More than once he told me he wouldn't be in for that night because he was going to show a friend he just met around town. Another time, he excused himself to go visit some friends to watch a Pink Floyd video. On his last night there, he excused himself to go party with his fiancee and friends at a Dallas Greenville Avenue bowling alley. I could have used him as standby in case I had some remaining questions (which I did). Well, to get back on track, management needs to keep tabs on the employees who are excessively calling in, and start demanding proof, such as doctors' notes. As for the ones who think they can come and go as they please, management needs to give them an ultimatum: Stop this bullshit now or your ass is out this door!!!And then, as I've said before, if call-ins get excessive, Sarah's boyfriend has the right not to answer his phone. How is the company to know he hasn't stepped out somewhere, or maybe has taken a small trip on his day off? If you're not on call 24 hours a day, the company can't expect you to just sit by the telephone on your day off. I don't know of any McD employees who have assigned 24-hour pagers.
