A corporatist, consumer society will always encourage the view that money is more important than anything else but most people will question and resist such a notion when the social costs outweigh the adolescent fervour for ego gratification.
I agree with your comments, but I feel that the distance between the said workers and the rainforest plays an important part too. I may be just representing those of us that work in Australia but the truth is the McD rainforest destruction isn't happening in our back yards which tends to make us care less (I am also aware that I speak to myself, and hope it doesn't appear that i am speaking for ALL australians)
Also I don't think the social costs are outweighing at the moment...sure in the future when the hole in the ozone layer is as big as asia every person will resist but the way the world is run now, money is the most important aspect of most of my McFriends' lives.
