I am currently employed at a Subway restaurant in Victoria. Not only are employees at our store being underpaid, we are also understaffed at our busiest times. I am currently 20 years old and working approximately 12 hours per week at a CASUAL rate of $10.33 per hour. We do not get time and a half nor double time nor are we given breaks every four hours (we are given NO breaks). As an example, on Saturdays, we have 4 employees working. It takes approximately 5 minutes to serve a customer (if they are only ordering 1-2 sandwiches). Each employee must greet the customer, take their order, collect the required bread, ask for the customers requirements, heat the food (if required), ... etc, package the order, try to induce them into purchasing other food items, and complete the transaction on the cash register. We don't have other people preparing our customers orders out the back of the store. We have to do the work of many people (food preparation, LOTS of cleaning, customer service, answering telephone calls, cash management (safe deposits, cash counting, change collection), etc, plus cook/proof bread and cookies at regular intervals, wash dishes). At times, we work alone (1 person in the store). McDonalds employees should be grateful that 1) they have a very limited job description 2) they are paid a proper wage (proper OFFICIAL casual rates) 3) they don't have to work alone or with 2 other people when trying to serve approximately 60-70 customer per hour at weekend lunch rushes 4) they receive breaks at regular intervals (chances to sit down) 5) they receive some form of discount and/or benefit cards (Subway employee's receive shit) Not only are we underpaid, we are often rosted on for 3 hour shifts, (e.g 12-3pm, or 8.30pm-11.30pm), not giving us enough hours to attain a reasonable weekly wage (given we are underpaided).
