MOORE PARK McDonald's

South Sydney Council is agonising over the recently submitted
Development Application to demolish the federation tennis pavilion and
build a McDonald's Restaurant at the corner of Anzac Parade and Lang
Road, in Moore Park.

Back in 1989 the Parklands management began the process of re-
establishing the formal entrance to Centennial Park, known as old Grand
Drive. These plans required the Colonial Diner café to vacated the site
and the building was demolished in the early 1990's. Unfortunately
McDonald's restaurant chain had eyes on this site. A problem
compounded early in 1995, when without community consultation, they
secured a licence agreement with Parklands management.

In August 1995, after community condemnation, South Sydney Council
rejected the proposed development. But McDonald's took it on to the
Land and Environment Court which decided in July this year that the
proposal is permissible. In the meantime however, Parklands management
have proceeded with the Grand Drive scheme and received $7 million of
Federation funding to re-establish the road to be re-named "Federation
Drive". Now a proposal for an 80 spacer car park and 70 seat restaurant
could take the western third of old Grand Drive. Disgraceful.
