Jealousy in the Workforce

I have been working at McDonald's for 7 months now and have encountered a very surprising thing, at least for me. Many of you will smile and shrug knowingly, but I've never experienced this before.

Throughout my 7 months at Mcdonald's I've gotten along quite well with my coworkers, extremely well with some. I have a reputation as an extremely hard worker and one who works a lot and takes a lot of shifts. For this reason I was promoted to manager in 5 months.

Immediately after this promotion, however, certain people who have been there for much longer than me (2+ years) became suddenly resentful and were impolite to me, sporting the attitude "Who does this guy think he is anyway?" The ironic thing is that these crew are those who are completely unmotivated, have horrible attitudes toward work and treat their jobs without any respect.

These people and one crew trainer who thought he was lined up for manager but was passed over at the last moment (he was very upset) all signed up for the latest rap session, and surprise surprise, the comments received about me were just about the worst ever reported about anyone. Only one person in the group stood up for me.

Needless to say, I was spoken to by the head manager about it, and this caught me completely off guard. My enthusiasm for working has been dampened dramatically, and my respect for these people has dipped down to almost non-existent. i now approach working with a type of resignation, and no longer try to achieve trust with crew.

I always thought that such jealousy and backstabbing was something reserved for clearly horrible people and/or corporate suit-types who want nothing more than to get ahead...but now I see that it can also stretch to those who resent other hard-workers and need a scapegoat for their own failures. If anyone else is in a similar situation, or is going to be, I'm warning you, trust no one. Seriously.
