: That Jones fellow has about the worst advice I"ve ever read in history. My garbage man gives better advice than that clown. You can be anything you want in life, but don't listen to the Jones. Of the jobs I've held before beginning a career in earnest, I've held a handful of low-paying jobs, in and out of foodservice circles. Some have been good, but most have been shit. The job I hold in a unionized metalworking shop is the best I've had, even excluding the pay. A few reasons come to mind (again, excluding wages that are above the poverty level):
1. None of the petty little arguments about who makes more money than whom ever come up. The pay scale is ther for everyone to see. Not to mention the pay is for seniority and for knowledge. Workers who are trained to run every piece of equipment in the shop earn more than others who know less.
2. The talk of safety is more than lip service. When a piece of equipment fails, it's taken out of service immediately. When that equipment is safety related, it's fixed or replaced that day. I compare that to all the times I've cooked hamburgers on the bun toaster or in the fryer because the 17-year-old grill has failed and the owners were too cheap to replace it, or been electrocuted by the steam table when the wires contained within defeated the duct tape used as insulation.
:Good luck in the Army!!!
Great advice there; get through basic training just in time to be sent to Kosovo!
