Union finds McDonald's pitch no small patato.
Next week, Mcdonalds will do something it rarely has to do: The company will go head to head with a union, in a five day B. C. Labour Relations Board hearing that will determine whether a franchise in Sqamish B. C., will become the only unionized McDonald's in North America.
The Case marks the latest, and potentially highest-profile, example of a new kind of organizing strategy. Unions are now trying to bolster declining memberships by targeting low-wage part-time service-sector workers , a trend that some union supporters say is a mixed blessing.
The Canadian Auto Workers Union which is organizing the Squamish McDonald's, already represents 11 Starbucks and 40 KFC outlets in British Columbia...........
