This kind of behaviour by McDonalds managers is not at all uncommon. I had a friend who used to work for Ronald McJackboot when we were in high school. McDonalds had a rule that employees weren't allowed to wear white socks when working behind "the line" ("food" prep area). This is a messy place to work, and my friend used to wear a ratty pair of cowboy boots to avoid ruining his decent shoes. And, <*gasp*> yes, he did indeed wear the dreaded contraband white socks -- invisible, of course, when wearing boots... or so you'd think. Except that when his three-month performance review came up, the manager criticized him for wearing the verboten socks. But how could he have known what colour the socks were under the ratty boots? "I watched you changing." My friend did what any of we bourgeois types who don't eally need the money anyway would do: he got changed one last time and left for good. Nice that he had the choice: I wonder how it'd be for a mother of two just in from Sri Lanka who really couldn't do without the income, paltry as it is. Now, of course it could have been worse: if he'd worked for Disneyland they could've had him drop his trousers and check for objectionable underwear. And I'm not even joking.
