: I've been an avid reader and poster of the whole McSpotlight website for over a year, and I've just got to ask a question of the general population because as far as I can see, people are complaining, and doing nothing.Hugh Morris: Well, I have to admit that complaining is a bit fun. I spent the better part of eight years working at Taco Bell for next to nothing. It's all done in jest, but a well-timed "This is BORING!" or "This SUCKS!" during a busy hour lightens the mood considerably. My favorite is to announce, "Y'know, it's time for an ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT!", then belch or break wind (when there aren't any customers around, of course). Misery loves company, dont you think?
: I've heard it a thousand times "Managers treat us like crap" "I'm not getting paid fairly" "My boss is an idiot who doesn't know how to do his job" etc, and my question to you is...What is holding you at your work placement ?
Hugh Morris: Mostly economic need. Most co-workers in my age demographic were pissing their paychecks away on clothes and automobile insurance, but I needed the money for food and mortgage payments. If you're younger than 25 and in school, there aren't that many jobs available.
During those years, I was offered other jobs that paid slightly better, but I turned them down. They were all restaurant management jobs. I reasoned that I already had a job that made my stomach turn and my colon clinch; why would I want another? Taking another job would mean I'd have to feign interest in it for a while, and I didn't think I could do that for a similar job for similar pay. Besides, there are always things about a job not to like. Don't you suppose you're better suited to change them from the inside, rather than from the outside looking in?
: Is there a big hitman holding a gun to your head saying "You must stay here" ? When there's a lot of jobs available, and a lot of people looking for work how hard can it be for you to walk out, and get another job ? Within days your company will have you replaced. You won't be missed.
Hugh Morris: Well, it's been nearly a year since I telephoned about two hours before I was supposed to show up for my closing shift, leaving them with no closing manager. Whether my charming personality is missed or not, the "NOW HIRING" sign on the marquee has yet to be removed for more than two weeks at a time. Another phone call would get me my job back, but I can't afford the pay cut now.
: So before you come on here complaining about your work, your boss, etc, you've got to realise that you can easily leave. Sure, for a while you won't have much money, but if it's getting you down so much, a break would do you the world of good.
Hugh Morris: Agreed, but sometimes it takes a while. Complaining simply helps to pass the time.
