Actually Monsanto has I believe tried to commit havoc in our country. But reality is also that such thing cannot be really checked/ verified given the media hype and politicisation of issues. Aparently the hybrid seed which would have taken care of 'bollworm', backfired, making the villagers upset about the promotion.The entire crop was burnt and experiments postponed indefinetely. The MNC's usually have a problem of taking the consumers for granted, and given the illeteracy level of the villagers they have a 50:50 chance of winning. One 50% if things go well for them and another 50% if they take care of the village chiefs and politicians.
The villagers are very sentimental sort and often get swayed by the influencers and once swayed, it's prudent for the wiser classes to beat a retreat. It would make sense if the MNC take the villagers into confidence before proceding ahead. But given the modern day business time is in shortage, and then we pay a heavy price.
Wonder what happens in the western world where there are stringent laws in force??
