I have to agree with you. I have opened my own small, copy/print shop and am running into a similar problem with a slight difference. Kinkos. Our prices are actually lower than Kinkos, but we are having a hard time getting business, mainly due to Kinko's ability to afford large advertising campagnes. That is the real problem, as i see it. Smaqll business owners are strapped for cash in the beginning and your local newspapers and magazines charge too much for them to advertise in; forget television! If the local media would help the small businesses advertise, maybe, just maybe they could compete.
Another aspect is business loans, banks will not touch a new business without the owner putting his life as colateral. I recently tried to get a measly $5,000.00 to upgrade some equipment in order to compete with what the chains have, and was told that unless my business had a track record they could not give me the loan. If i had a track record, i wouldnt need the loan.
