An Edinburgh man's web site offering support to members and ex-members of a controversial US cult has been summarily removed by his provider, Freeserve, after legal threats were received. This comes after a recent physical assualt on the webmaster an Edinburgh street by a cult member. The multi-million dollar Watchtower Bible & Tract Society Inc, best known for its Jehovah Witness literature distributors, has mounted a succession of challenges to web sites over the past 5 years.
Internet paranoia does not stop at critical sites - most personal web sites promoting Witness doctrine and Watchtower products have been closed down recently after further instructions to Jehovahs Witnesses from their parent corporation to avoid contact with the Internet wherever possible. A previous wave of site closures occured after similar pressure in 1997.
