Can a local economy survive a Wal-Mart?

In a few months a new super Wal Mart will invade my area. My area is full of locally owned and operated businesses that have been around for years. Restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, etc. A few of my colleagues and I have often pondered the question of whether or not these local stores will survive this new Wal Mart.
Of course the majority of people will pass up the local stores in favor of the lower prices of the mass marketed Wal Mart. The local businesses are in serious trouble if they can't buy in extremely large quantities like the Wal Mart can.

I suppose only time will tell if my area will become completely Wal Martized.
