What kind of twisted culture are we living in?

They're not just doing something that they deem harmful to their children on A WHIM, they're willfully causing them harm as a REWARD for good behavior! What kind of twisted culture are we living in? Are there any parents out there that would like to explain this to us? Please, restore what little faith I have left in humanity.
