: The items with the lowest food cost and highest profit margin are fries and drinks. So, if they can be sold separately (to go with that "free" mac) that is how the cost of the promotion is recouped.
I accept this, and yes, we did have little stickers reading 'Suggest Large EVM's with Mac Promo'. In fact, after the promo finished they left the part reading 'Suggest Large EVM's.' But you are still missing the point. Of course McD's make more money during these promos, or they wouldn't do them. My point is that, if the customer is happy to pay £1.90 for a Big Mac, you can hardly say it's a con when they get 2 Big Macs for the same price. Granted, it shows that they are able to sell 2 Macs for that price and still make a profit, but then I would guess that McD's could probably sell 5-10 Macs for £1.90 and still make a profit. In this sense I agree, £1.90 for 1 burger is expensive, but the fact that the UK has over 930 restaurants shows that people are prepared to pay. And yes, McD's probably make a fortune on fries and drinks, and people could get a can of coke for a lot less, but people are happy to pay 90p for ½ litre of Coke 'on tap', so good for them. These cokes and fries are paying my wages, so I'll keep selling them... Ok, I'm done ranting now
