Shaun: Just one question. If that is your opinion on America, and if you really dislike Americans, why don't you move? DADDIO:
1) The rest of the world sucks to, maybe even worse. But the U.S., given its vast wealth and scientific knowledge, has the unique distinction of
a) having no excuse for sucking as bad as it does and
b) being widely responsible for the ass-biting conditions elsewhere.
Why move to another country where I’ll be the victim of U.S. international politics instead of the victim of U.S. domestic politics? If I stay here, I can better contribute to the demise of the U.S. institutions responsible for this state of affairs.
2) Everyone that I know and love is here in the U.S. Moving to another country would probably entail giving up those relationships that are most important to me, not that I would necessarily let that stop me, but it certainly does pull on my heart strings. Note that, as wonderful as my friends are, I despise the shallow, uninformed, money grubbing American within each one of them as I despise the same demons within myself.
Shaun, in his magical way, has provided us with yet another elegant example of how we, as U.S. citizens, are royally screwed. Suggesting that I move because I am discontent with the state of my country’s affairs is tantamount to admitting that we, as individuals, either
a) have no right as citizens to protest, petition, and revolt
b) have such rights, but exercising them is an act of futility
Shaun, I had no idea you were so pessimistic about the U.S. With critics like you, who needs supporters.
