What I've learnt from my doctor (PhD in medicine, University of Sydney) is that marijuana can be an effective painkiller (for *extreme* pain, that is), but that it is addictive, can cause birth defects if smoked during pregnancy, and is also a cause (though no the only cause) of schizophrenia. It also destroys the serotonin in the brain (the substance used to transmit messages between nerve cells in the brain), slowing reflexes and thought process dramatically. That's not everything there is to know about it, but I'll see if I can get some more information for you.
