Danielle Moore 757-622-7382 Norfolk, Va. -- While the average American child eats five hamburgers a week, PETA's popular
Grrr! Magazine for kids will likely make that number drop considerably once its young readers
learn about the tremendous animal suffering that goes into making every Happy Meal.
In an article titled "Gross Food Facts," which appears on pages 2 and 3 of the quarterly 'zine,
PETA gives the lowdown on McDonald's not-so-happy meals, noting that many burgers contain
bits of spinal cord and nerve tissue, blood, bone marrow, and other "unsavory surprises." The
article also cautions that before poultry makes it to the plate, birds are killed in slaughterhouses
so disgusting that a former U.S. Department of Agriculture scientist says the "final product is no
different than if you stuck it in the toilet and ate it."
PETA hopes that students will help spread the message about McDonald's animal cruelty by
finding creative uses for the set of stickers, pictured at right, which is included with each
                 magazine.
"We're betting kids will lose their lunch when they know what, or should we say 'who,' goes
into fast food," says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. "Kids deserve a break today, and the best
way to keep their lunch bags from becoming barf bags is to 'Go Veggie!'"
