Suzanne: I remember hearing this story when I was growing up in America. Back then most goods bearing the label "Made in Japan" were considered inferior to those labelled "Made in USA". Hence it was claimed that Japanese goods were being exported via a small nearby island called Usa so they could legitimately bear the label "Made in USA". I doubt it's really a true story, though - probably just another urban myth.

Morris: The island really exists, but the labelling must show the country of origin, not the city. If the city is included, it's probably for advertising purposes. Auto parts made in London, Ontario, which are exported to London, England, must say MADE IN CANADA. My own grandfather says an Army buddy of his had a porcelain figurine he brought home from Japan after World War II bearing the mark MADE IN USA, with the name "Japan" following in smaller print.

: McSpotlight: Well, there is the matter of the McDonald's supplier that called itself "100% pure beef!"; and registered it as a trade mark; thus McDonald's could buy things like brains and tails and hooves and still put "100% pure beef!" on the packaging...

Morris: That, and Kentucky Fried Chicken truncating the name to KFC because they are breeding mutant birds with six legs, two heads, and four breasts, which the government will not allow them to label as "chicken."
