Some things to consider about sweatshops

This seems like the best of the many threads on sweat shops to respond to. Some things to consider about sweatshops:
1) There are 6 billion people in the world. There are not enough resources for everyone to live the way Americans live today. Check out http://www.popco.org/press/pimentel.html
2) Sweat shops bring some benefits to workers, because it's better to be underpaid than to starve.
3) Sweat shops in foriegn countries benefit the companies and the US.
Forcing sweat shops to close and moving the labor to the US seems like a bad solution. A better goal should be to improve conditions in the factories. But how? A law for US-owned companies? An international
organization with no legal power that regulates by suggestion? Consumer activism to improve conditions? So far, nothing seems to be really effective either for improving working conditions or the overall economic picture.
