---Nice post. How you react may be determined by your cultural conditioning, and the force that drives the reaction may indeed be 'in the genes'. It is part of what makes us human. Without emotions we would be boring robots. I too love 'quietness and stillness', nights beside lakes. (It is hard to find such places anymore - without the sound of chain saws)
I return home to the squalor and madness that we have all become accustomed to. The homeless, the desparate poor, the rat race and road rage. Rodney King gets beaten by cops to within an inch of his life largely due to his race and says, almost puzzled, "Why can't we just get along?" And then there's "the bystander effect".
Part of me has a taste for creative science. Another part instinctively reacts when faced with injustice and it causes me to lose my appetite for creative science -and I RESENT this. What is a root source of this injustice? For pillage of the earth's finite resources? For the destruction of values associated with "quietness and stillness"? For me it is 20th century capitalism. Plain and simple.
