: : That's also why intentional communities are important. Maybe some of those folks see that have something to lose with eco-devastation, and maybe they see that capitalism won't solve their personal problems (like maybe a transaction or two would erase my student loan debt).: But Sam, raising the enormous amount of money to start a commune (after your loan is squared away!) and then starting one will only, if the members are so inclined, halt eco-devastation there.
SDF: Absolutely correct. But at least eco-devastation will be halted SOMEWHERE.
: How do communes halt Exxon's ravages?
SDF: Well, let's see... maybe the employees at Exxon could quit en masse and form one of their own, using property pilfered from the corporation itself....
: Don't we need to take those badly-managed means of production from them?
SDF: I like the idea, though as you remember, my concern in promoting communies and utopianism was that the current social set-up is unlikely to produce large numbers of people whose existences are threatened by capitalism and who don't believe that more capitalist activity is the answer to their problems.
: Or you you think Exxon will be halted by a boycott or two?
SDF: This is even more of a privilege of the well-off than buying land for a commune. The oil cartels have everyone's number.
None.
