(I wouldn't have asked had you done the rephrasing: "critical of what is called 'empathy'" to "expressions of empathy" in the first place. (Though even that may confuse the mechanism with its product - like criticizing the brain's function for producing ideas.) It is, after all, the lack of empathy that so enables racism, concentration camps, etc.)
