: Still, what happens when small business is crushed by big capital? Does the petty proprietor retain his or her illusions about diligence and creativity and all the rest---or does he and she throw in with the workers who lead the push to restrain or overthrow a business culture out of control? The results are mixed. The result is fascism. Recall- fascists were anti-big banks, the jew formed a metonymic link with interest and usury, etc. The small owners form the reactionary nationalist backbone of the ideological structure.
You're right to point to their turning to teh workers, indeed, a hallmark of fascism is that it will masquerade as the workers friend, and try and link itself with the lowest in society- its a degenerate brand of Liberalism.

Nazi revolution. They will turn to the big state to protect them, and keep their ideological weltungshauung alive.
Obviously, this is not cast Iron, but it does represent the general trend- Euro-scepticism is largely a petit-bourgeois affair over here, big capital wants Europe, small capital is highly threatened. Socialism has to offer them a genuine escape in order to win them over.
