About viruses: I'm no expert, but since hotmail is a website and not a traditional email program, I would venture that the anti-virus software you run while surfing the Net would protect you at hotmail as well.
You can use the "move to" button to move selected emails into other folders. I'm not sure, but I think you can also direct incoming mail into different folders other than just the inbox, though I may be thinking of another web-based email service.

McSpotlight: Right. First off, you *cannot* send a virus by plain text in an email; only as an attachment in a Microsoft format (Word or Excel, typically). Hotmail's actually run on Unix boxes (Sun SPARC stations; NT couldn't handle the load!) and as such, is no more vulnerable than any other mail program. The devil to watch is in the attachment, not the mail; do not open *any* attachments without first checking them for infection. Simpler still, just don't open attachments from a source you're not absolutely certain is safe. Or you could simply use a better operating system than Windows.
