Everywhere in Eastern countries there has been a pronounced militarization of daily life as the Boyars struggle to carve up the economic cake. As the Russian economist O.S. Pcheltsinev noted in 1995, there are now some 25,000 private security firms in Russia alone employing some 800,000 people, all adding to the supposed 'value added' of the private sector. He suggested that if 'if the ongoing struggle for the redistribution of property continues, this sector will employ as many people as was recently employed by the armed forces, KGB and police together.'
