SDF: This reminds me of Joseph McCarthy's 1950 assertion, in front of all America: "I have here the names of 150 card-carrying Communists..." What he was holding in his hand, however, was the sports page of the local newspaper. At any rate, the McCarthy Era, an era of repression in American politics, was thusly born out of the mouths of liars.

SDF: Since you are so good at reading politics into vague aphorisms, perhaps you could also tell us the political stripe of those who say, for instance, "a stitch in time saves nine," or "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". Are they Nazis? Anarchists? Republicans? Welfare-statists?
