The need for management

You seem to be talking about two different things at once. The CEO and the Board of Directors are not directly involved with innovation, which is generally left up to the R&D department or, in the case of pharmaceuticals, the gov't.

Whatever the case, an idea is worthless unless it's put into action, and it's only through phsical labor that can do it.

As for management, Braverman, in Labor and Monopoly Capital, gives a wonderful analysis of the rise of management in post-industrial revolution factories, which had its roots in pre-industrial revolution factories, such as they were. This goes to the whole idea of the division of labor and worker alienation.
