SDF: On the one hand we have the demonization of Milosevic's machine and the opposition to "negotiation with Hitler," for what it's worth:Copenhagen: :We now have the situation where to save the muslims in kosovo many many serbs who have not been involved in the ethnic cleasing are going to die. What ever happened to DIPLOMACY?
Lark: That's a good point but how do you work with a state that sponsers paramilitaries to work in the spirit of Death Squad Diplomacy? How many Kosovos are killed while you talk?
SDF: And on the other hand, we have paranoia about Russia:
Lark: As for russias pan-slavic sabre rattling, if the problem had been dealt with immediately with extreme prejudice the ruskies would have been cleaning up afterward.
SDF: The unrelenting paranoia about Serbia, Russia, pan-Slavism etc., combined with the State Department rejection of negotiation with a "Hitler" possessed of some tiny fraction of the total US arsenal (not to mention a Russia that, yearly, spends less than 1/4 of the US annual military expenditure), will threaten to create the next Cold War (or maybe a nuclear war but let's hope they're not that stupid)... This isn't a criticism of Lark's attitude, which like my pessimism doesn't amount to much in this world of shit they're in out there, but rather it's a criticism of the State Department -- they're the ones with the power... you know, they could have tiptoed toward a resolution after the temporary Serb cease-fire, they could have negotiated a little more seriously at Rambouillet, but hey, if they think he's really Hitler, why would they bother...
None.
