I think the best way to bring about change is to support the alternatives to the things you hate. There seems to be a growing feeling of, "Let's blow up McDonalds! Then there will be no more problems!" But if we blew up McDonald's, some other corporation would just step into their smoking shoes.

A better plan is to support the things you want to support. For example, it's my beleif that an hour spend at your local organic farmers' market is worth 100 hours protesting McD's. Also, unfortunately, many groups with worthy causes need money, so organizing benefit concerts is FUN and profitable.
But it's really up to- I'd watch out for groups that want to use you when you aren't sure of your ideals. So educate yourself, stay involved and aware, and never give in. Those are my cheesy inspirational words for the day.
