: Is the social darwinism that capitalism espouses "right" or "moral?" Why or why not?Well, I would say that social darwinism is natural. The free market economy is the purest economy that has ever existed (incidentaly, the only one that has ever existed is Hong Kong's totally pure capitalist economy). Adam Smith prophesized that through incentives, inovation, private property, and unregulated trade, a society's economy would essentially elevate it to increasingly higher levels. Capitalism is what allows us to have this discussion online. It has increased our standard of living, perhaps at a cost, but I think that most of us would agree that it has been worth it.
By raising the overall standard of living, everybody benefits. That doesn't happen in a command economy.
So I wouldn't say that social darwinism is "moral," but that it is a biproduct of a system that gives the lower classes more comfort than they would have under a controled economy.
