: Capitalism is a morally bankrupt system that we tolereate b/c it works. Socialism can be argued better in theory but has historically failed. Why? Society does not allow it. Human nature does not allow it. We live with capitalism because it works in reality, not just theory But I think you'll find that "human nature" prevents Capitalism, at least the Capitalism of the "freely associated" that Gee etc. are fans off.
Real Capitalism is about survival of the strongest and most cunning and there's no way it'll change, the Classical Liberals had big plans for Capitalism along Gees lines but if they could arrive today they'd be horrified and have to admit that not a lot had changed form fuedal times and the anarchists where right.
Why will human nature and society not permit socialism? I think if you do a poll of how many people find the following quotes acceptable you'd find a lot in favour:
"from each according to their abilities to each according to work"
"From each according to their abilities to each according to want"
I mean not to be simplistic or nothing but within the family do parents steal form their children? No because a natural human bond and relationship exists and this can realistically be expanded to inculde everyone, I mean do you steal from your neighbours or friends? You'll have to deal with the consequences if you do, but generally I dont and it's not because of the consequences either.
None.
