I think humankind is essentially a selfish and cruel animal. I am constantly baffled by the extremes of beauty and hideousness inherent in the "human experience." I think your short essay summed things up rather well; however, I don't think a consumerist society alone is responsible for the general human nastiness. Read your history books and see how 'evil' every human civilization has been, or becomes given time.
