From ABC News:American distrust of international law is nothing new. More than 10 years ago, in April 1984, Nicaragua filed charges against the United States in the Netherlands-based World Court, accusing the Reagan administration of trying to overthrow its government. A month later, the court ordered the United States to respect Nicaragua’s borders and halt the mining of its harbors by the CIA.
But the administration, getting wind of Nicaragua’s suit, had announced three days before it was filed that the United States would
refuse to accept any World Court rulings on Central America for two years.
In 1986, the court found the United States guilty of violating
international law through its support for contra rebels, and
ordered the payment of reparations to Nicaragua. The United States has not heeded the ruling.
