: I think you kind of missed my point. regardless of what would be the most rational thing to do from an American socialist viewpoint, I believe that it would have better to vote for Carter in 1980 for a single reason. If Carter had won in 1980, much of Central America would probably be socialist democracy today. Ironically, it might have been better for international socialism to subvert our preferences in 1980 and vote reluctantly for a Democrat- albeit, the best Democrat (the best president, actually) since FDR.
Not to gang up with you on Barry, NJ, but given Carter's record on Guatemala, I cannot seem him embracing the Nazis of Guatemala, El Salvador, and the Nicaraguan Contras like Reagan did; Carter would not have surrounded himself with scum like Elliot Abrams, Jeane Kirkpatrick, John Poindexter, and Oliver North, and though Carter's agenda would not have satisfied liberals and leftists here in the USA, he would have been a million times better for the poor of Central America.
