*It's worse than that. Since close to 40% of union members in the US identify with the Republicans, unions have taken to backing whichever candidate seems to support more of the union's political agenda. I've been saying this for two years now, and I'll say it again... the Republican Party is going to make a play for the support of the larger Unions in the US. It's an idea which is very big at the state caucus level and it's slowly making its way to the national stage. The Republicans have had it with the Christian Coalition and are turning to Labor as a new constituency. The national Republicans have even sponsored legislation to make it legal for companies to form 'unions' which do not have to conform to the requirements of the NLRA (the so-called 'Team Act').
Not that I care for the Democrats mind you... I consider them to be the (considerably less in the last ten years) liberal wing of the corporate One Party state.* --K

The people who are truly suffering under the current regime file into churches on Sundays to hear how much better life will be in the next life... meanwhile shows like "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" prove just how much money there is to throw around on truly assinine :::hack, splutter!::: 'entertainment.' Not only do we have the opium of the masses in religion, but also the crack cocaine of commercial TV (and let's not forget the rape of the WWW).
