Russia offers to supply n-subs to India
In the midst of adverse global reaction to India's nuclear tests, Russia has made a
significant gesture of cooperation to New Delhi by offering to supply some more Kilo
class nuclear submarines to it. The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral
Vladimir Kuroyedov, told Interfax that handing over of Russia's mighty warship Admiral
Gorshkov was very much on the cards. Currently undergoing major overhaul in a
northern Russia freeport, it was likely to join the Indian fleet in the not-so-distant future.
India is already in possession of nine submarines of Kilo class from Russia and is
currently negotiating for more. Admiral Kuroyedov said two or three Russian Pacific
warships and a tanker would take part in the joint naval exercises with the Indian Navy in
the coming autumn. India needs at least four more nuclear blasts before it can go in for
successful modelling and computer simulations, the business daily, Kommersant, reported
quoting an unnamed Russian military expert with `close knowledge' of the Indian nuclear
programme. The expert doubted that the latest series of five nuclear blasts conducted by
India was the last.
