As you no doubt appreciate, there is no way such can be forced / conned upon people - they have to arrive at it voluntarily as a positive decision (ie not falling back on it during hard times, but seeing it as a move ahead for themselves). The only way, realistically, that will happen is if some intentional communities show the way and others see it in action and like it. Any such transition need not be overnight - it could takes generations on a global scale - if it happens at all.
I can argue all day with an orthodox marxist who seeks power and 'his kinda revolution', but your point here captures pretty much the crux of the matter. It leaves us with the question why aren't people now, or in the general trend of history, choosing this as their primary way of life? There are thousands of questions which eminate from that.
