It means "one pound". As in the currency used to measure 'stored' or accumulated value. As in, what does 'one hour of labor' mean? Back-breaking work? Doing my taxes for me? Loafing? What?
Listen. I've got these bills, see? These promises of consumer goods and services for my productivity to a businessman, rated in these 'pound' things (or dollars, as I would obviously prefer). You've got goods, so ... let's negotiate. Impress me, and you get some of these 'pounds' - a sale. Then you have something to negotiate with when your supplier comes by.
'Pounds' measure value. That value is variable, and is subject to market forces. One might be similarly obtuse, and pester an algebra teacher as to exactly how much 'x' is.
My God. Has it come to this?
