: Just a minor point. Hindus and Buddhists (at least a large number) actually believe that ANY animals might hold the soul of a decesed human being. Cows were sanctified in India for largely economic reasons (don't want to soudn like a hidebound Marxsit, but still). The ancient Hindus used a lot of milk products and plowing labor, hence cows were an exceedingly valuable resource. (Also their dung was sued as fuel). To them the cow was quite literally, a gift from God and to kill such a gift woudl be not only nonsensical economically but would also be sacrilegious. When someone gives you a nice gift you don't destroy it.

I do understand what you are saying but it is okay to kill cows because you are right it is a gift from God and we should use it. God does not mind that we eat cows, as a matter of fact that is why he gavethem to us not only for milk or plowig but to eat their meat also.
