It's always worth the effort trying to change them though, if you ask me.: It's certainly not torture free; in fact, it's probably a lifelong disability with lifelong pain and discomfort. Also, the thing about rough justice is that the justice meted out is measured by the passions of those involved, and if those involved are particularly angry, the "justice" will reflect that. Consider all hot- and cold-blooded justice. When your child decides to burn the contents of your wallet in order to see the pretty colors, your first angry response might be to knock his head off, but when you simmer down, the punishment will be more measured, and hopefully more effective both as a deterrent, and as rehabilitation. Outraged citizen posses don't engage in this kind of reflection, and neither do they consider any facts which might mediate the punishment. Thanks, but I'll stick with a judge who must abide by the written law.
Well what my position is, one I think you share, is that anarchists cant attack the state as rough justice because in a 'natural order' the people's fear, paranoia and out rage will create a rougher form of justice.
If your very punative or think you might never be the victim of rough justice then argue for anarcho-justice but dont argue the state is so terrible.
: Agreed. People have emotions: emotions can run hot, and hot-running emotions can lead to crime. People are irrational: irrationality can lead to impetuous and reckless decisions which harm others...crime again.
Well, I wouldn't say people are that irrational, it's difficult to generalise but I agree that crime, especially crimes against the person, and I regard burgularly or theft of personal possessions to be crimes against the person too, won't disappear until people do.

When did you ask me that? Course I've heard of Lurgan Norn Iron, Norn Iron is such a wee place you hear of all the places, apart from the really obscure ones but I know Lurgan, yeah, I'm trying to think of anything significant about Lurgan, I'll maybe get back to you about that.
