Thanksgiving: a relative term

I think what you were trying to describe was the United States Thanksgiving. One more cynical than I might conclude you truly believe Amercans control the rights to this holiday. Here in Canada we also have Thanksgiving. Like our nation's birthday, OUR Thanksgiving comes BEFORE yours does in the christian yearly calendar. ;-) Just kidding. Canadian Thanksgiving comes before the American equivalent because our farmers harvest most of their food earlier due to a shorter growing season.

As far as I treat it, Thanksgiving is a time when I celebrate the harvest. I reflect on all the hard work by farmers who grow my food. I reflect on the odd fact that only roughly 1% of all Canadians play a role in food production, and yet we all must eat. Our Thanksgiving was on October 11 this year, as far as I can remember. It was a while ago. Unlike the US, the Canadian Thanksgiving does not immediately preced the nation's busiest shopping day of the year.
