TELSTRA...A SCAM???

Posted by: Sierra ( The Union, Australia ) on November 11, 1999 at 13:04:42:

I realise that there was a few postings ages back, somewhere, but that was abour US phonecards. What I am proposing is that the "ignorace" of Telstra workers isn't what it seems.

Deposit 50c into any telstra payphone (any pay phone) and dial a local number. you will be cahrged 40c, the standard pay phone rate (25c is the normal rate if you call from home). But although you have 10c left, you don't get it back. Thus, for every local call that is made on a pay phone, you will pay twice as much as usual. But only if you put in 50c. why is this???

another theing to watch out for is that bugger of a call waiting. if it isn't turned off while you are using your mad little modem, you will be charged repeatedly, as the modem just keeps on dialing. at least that was Telstra's excuse. i was recently charged seventeen times for a call i made3 to brisbane (yes i was playing halflife over modem...).
That cost me a lot, and it has happened with local calls too.

Why is this??? Is this a standard feature of most phone comapnies, or is it just telstra.

MC...if you put this in the multinational rooms it won't work, telstra is a domestic comapany, recently privatised, and the majority of its owners are Australia.
